The vintage chart rates 2018 as very good in Champagne and red Burgundy, and as good in white Burgundy, Tuscany and Spain. In Champagne, record winter rainfall, the second warmest summer and the earliest harvest on 17 to 20 August yielded clean, opulent wines with remarkably low acidity; the character is soft and immediately appealing. The Brunello comes from a cool, wet year whose dry late September allowed the grapes to ripen fully; the wines are classically structured, fresh and aromatic, yet fall short of the great years in terms of polyphenol concentration and ageing potential, even if several producers assess their longevity more optimistically than the critics. Anyone seeking the slender, classic Brunello style will find it here. It is also worth browsing in Piedmont, where 2018 brought a fortunate turn after a dismal previous year, delivering high volumes of good quality, and in the northern Rhône, which produced healthy, full fruit, while the south suffered from the highest humidity since 1973 and downy mildew.

Our current stock of this vintage is shaped by Alsace, Priorat, the Loire, Champagne, Tuscany and Burgundy, with red and white evenly balanced. From Alsace, Zind-Humbrecht features several times, from the Loire Huet, from Priorat Familia Nin Ortiz and Terroir al Limit, from Tuscany Col d'Orcia and from Burgundy Chandon de Briailles.
