Wine Description for Late Harvest Furmint Teraszok 2018 from Királyudvar
- Colour & Appearance
- Radiant, rather pale golden yellow in the glass – surprisingly restrained for a Late Harvest, which already underscores the elegance of this wine visually.
- Nose
- Here the full complexity of the Tokaj region reveals itself: the wine smells impressively dry and spicy, almost meditative. Malted chicory, tobacco and stone dominate initially, accompanied by dried apricots, forest mushrooms and black tea. Beneath lie layers of green and yellow apples as well as citrus notes. The nose promises more acidity than the palate later delivers – a fascinating deception.
- Palate
- The entry masterfully balances between sweetness and acidity, with 46 grams of residual sugar never coming across as intrusive. The botrytis presents itself cleanly and elegantly, never jammy. Ripe stone fruit and crisp tree fruit merge with citrus peel, mushrooms and tea into a multi-layered flavour experience. The acidity (4.9 g/l) feels more subtle than expected, lending the wine a silky, almost creamy texture.
- Finish
- Medium to long, with lingering spicy notes and a fine mineral component that recalls the volcanic terroir of Tokaj.
- Terroir & Origin
- From the vineyard site Lapis in Tokaj, farmed biodynamically. The harvest took place on 21 September 2018 – early enough to preserve the characteristic acidity of Furmint, late enough for noble botrytis concentration.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Furmint, spontaneously fermented in 2.25-hectolitre barrels of Slavonian oak. Six months ageing on the lees impart additional texture and complexity to the wine. With 13.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.4, it displays perfect balance.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Brilliant with quail with Périgord truffle, Vietnamese crêpes Banh Xeo or as an elegant accompaniment to a classic apple tart. The spice and minerality of the wine also harmonise beautifully with aged hard cheese.
- Special Characteristics
- A Late Harvest that never puts sweetness in the foreground – rather a wine of dry character with delicate residual sweetness. Királyudvar once again proves why Tokaj ranks among the world’s great white wine regions.
