Biodynamic Viticulture
Wines full of vitality
The vineyard as a living organism – connected with earth, moon and cosmos. Our biodynamic winemakers work with nature, not against it.
What is biodynamics?
Biodynamics goes far beyond organic. The vineyard is regarded as a closed organism – soil, plants, animals and cosmic rhythms work together.
Founded in 1924 by Rudolf Steiner, it is today the gold standard in fine wine production. From Domaine de la Romanée-Conti to Zind-Humbrecht, the finest producers work biodynamically.
The three principles
Lunar calendar, preparations and circular economy form the foundation
Lunar calendar
- Working according to cosmic rhythms
- Fruit, root, leaf and flower days
- Harvesting on fruit days for greater aroma
- Traditional knowledge, newly applied
Preparations 500–508
- Horn manure (500): Strengthens roots
- Horn silica (501): Promotes photosynthesis
- 502–508: Activate compost
- Homoeopathic doses, powerful effects
Circular economy
- Own compost and manure
- Animals between the vine rows
- Biodiversity as principle
- Independence from external inputs

DiscoverFrequently Asked Questions
Does biodynamic wine taste different?
Many report greater vibrancy and precision. Scientifically difficult to measure, but often above average in blind tastings. The method demands extreme care – and care is something you can taste.
What’s the difference from organic?
Organic prohibits synthetic inputs. Biodynamics goes further: preparations, lunar calendar, stricter copper limits and biodiversity requirements. It’s an active building of soil health, not merely abstinence.
What are preparations 500 and 501?
Horn manure (500) strengthens roots and soil life. Horn silica (501) promotes photosynthesis and ripeness. Both are sprayed in homeopathic doses – it’s about impulses, not chemistry.
Lunar calendar – esotericism or science?
The moon’s influence on tides is fact. On plants? Scientifically contested. Many winemakers report measurable differences. Even if unclear: it does no harm and demands attentiveness.
Why do top wineries work biodynamically?
From Romanée-Conti to Zind-Humbrecht – those who want to express terroir to the maximum choose biodynamics. It’s the most consequential path to wines with unique precision of origin.
