Pian Dell'Orino

Antonio Galloni described it as „one of the absolute top wineries in Montalcino“. Pian Dell'Orino combines German precision with Italian passion - Jan Erbach from Karlsruhe and Caroline Pobitzer from South Tyrol have been creating exceptional Brunello here since 1997. Right next to the legendary Biondi-Santi, they cultivate strictly biodynamic six hectares of Sangiovese on fossil-rich soils. One vine produces one bottle of wine. The tasting room is also Jan's music library - high-end stereo meets 96-point Brunello.
More about Pian Dell'Orino
When German thoroughness meets Tuscan soil
The scent of Nettle tea hovers over the vineyards - Jan Erbach sprays his biodynamic preparations. What began in 1997 as an experiment of German and South Tyrolean passion is now part of the Brunello Champions League. Caroline Pobitzer acquired the estate outside Montalcino, Jan Erbach brought his Geisenheim viticulture studies and the experience of French internships with him. In 2018, they received the Demeter certification - the culmination of decades of biodynamic work.

Six hectares, four sites, one vision
Pian dell'Orino, Pian Bossolino, Scopeta, Cancello - four names that wine connoisseurs pronounce with reverence. Grown exclusively at an altitude of 300 to 400 metres Sangiovese Grosso on floors made of fossilised shells and Galestro. Caroline and Jan drew up their own geological maps - more intensive soil research than almost anyone else in Montalcino. The extreme yield reduction follows a simple philosophy: one vine, one bottle. The Brunello Vigneti del Versante 2018 with 96 points shows the fruits of this labour.

Lunar calendar and high-end stereo
Jan's tasting room is surprising: Vinyl collection and high-end stereo system between wine barrels. „Where the olfactory meets the auditory,“ says the passionate music lover, explaining his unusual combination. Similar precision prevails in the cellar - spontaneous fermentation in open wood cuvée, maturation in large barrels, no oenological interventions. Pruning follows the Lunar calendar, Chamomile tea sprays replace chemical treatments. This philosophy is reflected in the Piandorino 2021 accessible, but characterised by the same uncompromising quality.
Brunellopoli and the dissidents of Montalcino
When in 2008 the Brunellopoli scandal When the world of wine was shaken by the news that dozens of producers had mixed illegal grape varieties into their Brunello, Jan and Caroline reacted in their own way: They published the Analysis data of their harvests. Transparency instead of concealment. Together with Francesco Leanza from Salicutti and Stella di Campalto they founded Sangiovese Per Amico - Three wineries that have stayed away from the official „Benvenuto Brunello“ trade fair for years. Their message: authenticity does not need marketing events, but uncompromising work in the vineyard. The Rosso di Montalcino 2021 embodies this credo - single-varietal, biodynamic, unblended.
