Remirez de Ganuza

In 1989, Fernando Remírez de Ganuza built Spain's first mechanical sorting table – "they existed only in books, not in reality," he recalled later. Bodegas Remírez de Ganuza revolutionised Spanish winemaking with this innovation, long before precision became the standard. The former vineyard broker knew every outstanding site in Rioja and transformed this knowledge into extraordinary wines. Today, the winery manages 76 hectares across 246 individual parcels, with 70% of the vines over 70 years old. This meticulous attention to detail is reflected in every drop – from the renowned "shoulders versus tips" selection to the revolutionary overnight Transnocho pressing.

The Broker Becomes a Winemaker
Fernando Remírez de Ganuza (1951-2024) was an outsider par excellence. Born in Navarra into a meat production family, trained as a technical draughtsman – nothing suggested a wine career. Yet this unconventional path shaped his later obsession with detail and precision. For twenty years he was the largest vineyard broker in Rioja, knowing every parcel, every slope, every microclimate nuance. In 1989 he took the leap and founded his own winery in Samaniego, Rioja Alavesa. The first vintage followed in 1991 – and with it a new era of Rioja winemaking.

The Shoulder Philosophy
Fernando's most revolutionary innovation was the distinction between "Hombros" (shoulders) and "Puntas" (tips) of the grapes. The shoulders, which receive more sun, ripen more intensely and are used for the prestigious Gran Reserva and Fincas de Ganuza Reserva. The tips flow into the entry-level wine "Erre Punto". This meticulous selection on Spain's first mechanical sorting table was a sensation in 1989 – today standard in top estates worldwide. The obsession with detail goes so far that with the Transnocho, the grapes are pressed slowly overnight to achieve maximum extraction with minimal oxidation.
246 Parcels, One Vision

The winery manages 76 hectares across nine municipalities, divided into 246 individual parcels – a mosaic of ancient vines and microclimate diversity. 70% of the vines are over 70 years old, some even over a century. The largest single vineyard site "Viña Coqueta" comprises 11 hectares and provides the heart for the Gran Reserva. The Tempranillo vines grow on calcareous soils of Rioja Alavesa, which give the wines their characteristic minerality. This terroir-focused philosophy is shared by the winery with other pioneers such as Artadi, which also focus on single-vineyard expression in Rioja Alavesa.
New Era Under José Ramón Urtasun
Since 2019, José Ramón Urtasun (born 1976) has led the winery as full owner, supported by cellarmaster Jesús Mendoza, who has been with the estate since 1994 and became head oenologist in 2001. Mendoza was named best Rioja winemaker in both 2024 and 2025 – an unprecedented recognition of his expertise. Continuity is evident in legendary successes: the Gran Reserva 2004 received 100 points from Wine Advocate, the Reserva 2006 was crowned the best Rioja of the decade. The white wines from Viura and Malvasia also impress with 10 months barrel ageing and seven years bottle maturation – a patience that pays off in saline minerality and impressive ageing potential.
