Grenache

Grenache grape – Historical watercolour from Viala & Vermorel Ampélographie (1901)

Also known as: Garnacha (Spain), Cannonau (Sardinia)

Grenache loves heat and drought. On poor soils, with old vines and without irrigation, the variety shows a warmth and generosity that has nothing to do with jam – rather with ripe herbs, garrigue, lavender.

Matassa in Roussillon demonstrates what old Grenache vines on schist can achieve. In Priorat, Terroir al Limit works with the Spanish Garnacha in a similarly radical way. And in the southern Rhône, at Clos des Papes, Grenache shows its most classical side.
