What defines a Gevrey-Chambertin
Gevrey-Chambertin is the largest and most northerly of the great red wine communes of the Côte de Nuits. Nowhere else in Burgundy are so many Grands Crus clustered together: nine in total, led by Chambertin and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, alongside Charmes-, Mazis-, Griotte- and Latricières-Chambertin. The village owes the suffix -Chambertin, added to its name in 1847, to this most celebrated vineyard site.
Between the village wines and the Grands Crus lies a dense array of Premiers Crus – foremost among them Clos Saint-Jacques, which many consider to be of Grand Cru quality, as well as Les Cazetiers, Combe aux Moines and Aux Combottes. In the glass, Gevrey represents the more powerful, dark-fruited pole of Pinot Noir: black cherry, liquorice, forest floor and a firm tannic structure built for ageing. Our selection ranges from the biodynamic estates of Trapet and Bruno Clair to Hubert Lignier and Bruno Clavelier, as well as Charlopin Tissier and Jérôme Galeyrand – with many sites also available in magnum format. Those travelling further south through Burgundy will find the white counterpart in Meursault.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Gevrey-Chambertin?
A wine-growing commune in the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, awarded AOC status in 1936 and planted exclusively with Pinot Noir for red wine. Gevrey boasts more Grands Crus than any other village in Burgundy.
Which grape variety is used to make Gevrey-Chambertin?
Pinot Noir. White wine is a rare exception in the village and does not carry the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation.
What does Gevrey-Chambertin taste like?
Gevrey is considered the most powerful of the great red Burgundies: dark cherry and blackberry, liquorice and forest floor, with firm tannins and long ageing potential.
What is the difference between Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambertin?
Gevrey-Chambertin is the appellation covering the entire village (Village and Premier Cru). Chambertin without “Gevrey” is a single Grand Cru vineyard site – the village’s most famous, which gave it its double-barrelled name.
What food pairs well with Gevrey-Chambertin?
Hearty dishes: venison and game, duck, braised beef, mushrooms, and a ripe Époisses – a soft cheese from the same region of Burgundy.
How much does a good Gevrey-Chambertin cost?
Village wines from quality producers start at around €60 to €90, with Premier Crus from approximately €120. The Grand Crus surrounding Le Chambertin command several times that price.
Which Gevrey is best for beginners?
The village wine (“Villages”) from an artisanal estate. It already reveals what the commune stands for: dark cherry, earthy spice, and a firmer structure than neighbouring villages.
What does Gevrey-Chambertin mean?
In 1847, the village of Gevrey appended the name of its most famous vineyard: Chambertin, meaning “Bertin’s field”. Almost every village in the Côte d’Or followed this pattern.
Why is Burgundy so expensive?
Tiny parcels divided over generations, a frost-prone climate yielding small harvests, and global demand concentrated on just a few hectares. Village wines from Gevrey remain among the fairest entry points into red Burgundy.
