Pinot Gris (Pinot Gris)

Also known as: Grauburgunder (Germany, Austria), Pinot Grigio (Italy)

The grey-pink berries reveal the kinship with Pinot Noir. In the glass, Pinot Gris shows its fuller-bodied side – more body than Pinot Blanc, often with notes of pear, almond and a hint of smoke. In Alsace, it reaches its greatest depth.

Zind-Humbrecht is the benchmark: Grands Crus such as Rangen or Clos Windsbuhl demonstrate what the variety can achieve on volcanic soils. Franz Keller in Kaiserstuhl and Scarbolo in Friuli prove that Grauburgunder can have substance beyond Alsace as well.
