Wine Description for Pinot Gris Heimbourg 2020 from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht
- Colour & Appearance
- Radiant, intense golden yellow in the glass – a visual promise of substance and maturity.
- Nose
- Fascinatingly unconventional for a Pinot Gris: rather than upfront fruit, it first reveals green tea, undergrowth and herbal infusion. With air contact, lime, green apple and grapefruit unfold – an inspiring freshness, carried by compact minerality. This nose tells of cool northern winds and sparse calcareous sandstone soils.
- Palate
- The first sip surprises with a salty-sweet interplay that immediately whets the appetite. Invigorating acidity meets juicy fruit, underpinned by a malty impression and fine tannin structure – unusual for a white wine, but characteristic of great Pinot Gris. The apple fruit remains present without dominating. A wine with grip and substance that calls for food.
- Finish
- Persistent and spicy, with a mineral aftertaste. The acidity carries far and leaves a fresh, appetite-stimulating impression.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Heimbourg is a heroic vineyard site: slopes up to 50%, shallow soils over Oligocene calcareous sandstone conglomerate. Abandoned after the war, it was painstakingly revived by Léonard Humbrecht from 1978 onwards. The west-southwest exposure brings cooler temperatures – not a sun-drenched vineyard, but a terroir for tension and expression. The family today manages 4 of the 7 hectares.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pinot Gris in its Alsatian expression: substance-rich, with structure and ageing potential. The wine benefits from decanting (at least a day beforehand) and should not be served too cold from large Burgundy glasses.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- A born food companion that loves spice: pike-perch pan-fried on the skin with sauerkraut and chestnuts, blood sausage with apple on mashed potatoes, or vegetarian with potato and butternut squash salad with apple, walnuts and mushrooms. The structure also handles bold flavours.
- Special Characteristics
- A Pinot Gris that rewards patience – very good ageing potential. Biodynamic viticulture (Zind-Humbrecht), hand-worked on extreme slopes. This is no easy-drinking aperitif wine, but a characterful food wine with edges and character.
