Scarbolo

The Scarbolo family has been writing wine history in Friuli since 1982. The Scarbolo winery, once founded by Valter, is now run by his children Lara and Mattia into a new era. In 2020, the siblings took over the 30-hectare estate in Lauzacco and immediately switched to organic farming with biodynamic influences. The focus is on the Pinot grigio - a grape variety to which Lara devotes her full attention. As an oenologist with stints at Franz Haas and Vie di Romans, she knows what she is talking about: This underestimated grape deserves more than the industrial mainstream.
More about Scarbolo
Generational change with consequences
Valter Scarbolo spent around 40 years building up the winery in Friuli Grave - including the legendary Trattoria La Frasca. When his children took over the management in 2020, they turned everything upside down. Mattia, who had previously worked in the world of finance in New York, returned to his home turf. Sister Lara, trained in Udine and Bordeaux with experience at renowned wineries such as Franz Haas and Vie di Romans, took over the vinification. Together, they reduced the size of the business by almost 50 per cent and radically streamlined the range - a bold step that was also Cà La Bionda in Valpolicella with its focus on quality.

The rehabilitation of Pinot Grigio
Pinot Grigio is considered by many to be a mass-produced product - not at Scarbolo. Lara is doing everything he can to give this grape variety „a new and high-quality meaning“. The Salvadi shows the classic side: fresh, mineral, precise. The Pipinot on the other hand, surprises with its copper-coloured Ramato style and intense aroma. Scarbolo is one of the pioneers of the return to the traditional Ramato style, which its XL revived in the early 2000s.
Time as a quality factor
What sets Scarbolo apart from many others: Patience. The wines mature for four to five years before they are released on the market. This time in the cellar gives even supposedly simple wines such as the Areore a depth and complexity that is rarely found in this price range. In addition to Pinot Grigio, the Refosco Peraria as a powerful red wine of the region.

Terroir of the Grave
Lauzacco is located in the Friuli Grave, not far from the river Torre and the Slovenian border. The clay and siliceous soils and the special microclimate between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps are ideal for viticulture. While a new, ultra-modern winery is being built, the philosophy remains the same: artisanal work instead of industrial standards. When you drink Scarbolo, you experience Pinot Grigio as it should be - with character, depth and the courage to swim against the tide.
