Wine Description for Sous les Coudriers VdF 2024 by Hunter McKirdy

Colour & Appearance
Cloudy, noble pale gold with cream-coloured reflections – a natural wine that confidently displays its unfiltered character.
Nose
Bright and crystalline in character. The bouquet unfolds in layers: citrus, pear and quince to the fore, followed by angelica, rosewood, anise and a hint of ginger. With aeration, the wine opens further and reveals delicate floral notes as well as pronounced mineral accents of oyster shells and sea air. Everything feels refined, ethereal, almost weightless.
Palate
Here the wine reveals its true nature: what seemed restrained on the nose grips the palate with real intensity. Pronounced salinity and a vibrant acidity define its character, lending it compactness and impressive length. The moderate alcohol content of 12% vol. underscores the freshness and drinkability. Pure joy!
Finish
Long, saline-mineral with lingering citrus notes. The acidity carries far and leaves a refreshing, appetite-stimulating impression.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard lies at the foot of the Grand Cru Sonnenglanz on calcareous marl from the Oligocene, at just 230 metres elevation. The north-facing aspect tempers the microclimate and lends the wine its characteristic freshness. The poetic name „Sous les Coudriers“ – beneath the hazelnut trees – refers to the historical designation of this lieu-dit.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Pinot Gris from 20-year-old vines. The breadth and texture are typical for this young limestone terroir. Vinified naturally, unfiltered and unrefined.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The saline minerality and vibrant acidity make this wine ideal for oysters, scallops, sashimi or ceviche. Also an excellent choice with grilled monkfish, goat’s cheese or an Alsatian tarte flambée.
Special Characteristics
Hunter McKirdy’s signature is unmistakable: a wine of great precision and drinkability that combines Alsatian tradition with a modern, natural approach. The combination of low alcohol strength and high tension makes it an ideal food companion.
