Wine description for Pinot Gris 2025 by Domaine Albert Mann

Character
A dry Alsatian Pinot Gris with a precise structure and lively acidity. The aromatic profile ranges from yellow apple and pear to subtle toasty notes, underpinned by a mineral coolness that makes the wine feel taut and focused on the palate. Far from a heavy, opulent style, this is rather a wine of clarity and linear tension.
Terroir & Origin
Domaine Albert Mann in Wettolsheim ranks among the unsung heroes of Alsace. Since 1997, Maurice and Jacky Barthelmé have farmed biodynamically, with Demeter certification, across 25 hectares divided into nearly one hundred parcels. Their vines are planted in six Grand Cru vineyard sites – Schlossberg, Hengst, Furstentum, Steingrubler, Pfersigberg and Wineck-Schlossberg. In Hengst, Pinot Gris grows on calcareous soils that lend the variety both structure and depth. Vineyard work follows a philosophy of observation: horses replace tractors on steep slopes, keeping the soil alive and allowing roots to delve deep.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Gris – one of the noble varieties in Alsace, often marked by a natural richness that here is tempered by its limestone origins and the Barthelmés’ precise touch. Vinification follows the estate’s creed: never force anything, observe, and respond. The result is a wine that combines varietal typicity – notes of quince, mirabelle plum, and a hint of honey – with a taut, almost saline minerality.
Food Pairings
A versatile food companion with sufficient structure for more demanding dishes. It pairs beautifully with pan-fried hake with herb butter, white meats such as veal escalope or guinea fowl in a light sauce. It is also an excellent match for autumnal mushroom dishes – porcini risotto, for instance – or a pungent Munster from Alsace. Its dry profile and vibrant acidity also make it an ideal partner for Asian cuisine with mild spiciness.
