Wine Description for Grauer Burgunder Réserve 2025 by Kühling-Gillot

Character
Kühling-Gillot ranks among the pioneers of modern Rheinhessen and has established itself over recent decades as one of the region’s leading estates. This Grauburgunder Réserve embodies the precise, straightforward house style, which prioritises clarity and freshness over opulent richness. With a moderate 12% alcohol, this wine demonstrates elegance before power – a deliberate choice in times of rising alcohol levels.
Terroir & Origin
The estate manages first-class vineyard sites at the Roten Hang near Nierstein, where Rotliegendes – iron-rich sandstone from the Permian period – characterises the soils. These mineral terroir soils impart a distinctive tension and salinity to the wines. Rheinhessen, Germany’s largest wine region, benefits from a temperate continental climate with adequate rainfall and warm summers that provide optimal ripening conditions for the Burgundy family of varieties.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Gris, known in Germany as Grauburgunder, has developed over recent years into the flagship white Burgundy variety. The Réserve designation points to selective grape selection and possibly extended lees ageing. Kühling-Gillot works with natural fermentation and restrained cellar intervention. The dry vinification (as the residual sugar indicator confirms) underscores the estate’s philosophy of producing terroir-driven, food-friendly wines that combine substance with drinkability.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A versatile companion to modern cuisine: pan-fried monkfish, veal schnitzel with mushroom cream sauce, asparagus with hollandaise sauce or mature hard cheeses. The structure also carries Asian flavours – such as Thai curry with coconut milk or Vietnamese summer rolls. The moderate alcohol level makes it an ideal terrace wine for longer evenings.
