M. Schädler - Steffen Mugler

Precision meets Palatinate lightness - these wines combine Burgundian polish with the fruitiness of their origin. The M. Schädler - Steffen Mugler winery was created from the collaboration of two winegrowing families in Maikammer, who pooled their vineyards and their expertise. Steffen Mugler, who previously worked for renowned wineries, brings international expertise to the table, while the Schädlers contribute their deep roots in the terroir. Together they vinify Burgundy varieties and Riesling with particular sensitivity: spontaneous fermentation, long maturation on the lees, minimal fining. The result is wines that have substance without heaviness, elegance without paleness - honest growths with character and drinkability.
More about M. Schädler - Steffen Mugler
Two visions, one winery
The story of M. Schädler - Steffen Mugler does not begin with a foundation, but with a merger. When Steffen Mugler, after working for renowned companies such as Christmann returned to the Palatinate, he found partners in the Schädler family who shared his philosophy. The Schädlers had been cultivating vineyards around Maikammer for generations, but they lacked the capacity to produce wines to the highest quality standards. What followed was a symbiotic relationship: Traditional vineyard care meets Modern cellar technology, family tradition meets international experience.
Today, the winery cultivates around ten hectares in the best vineyards in the Southern Palatinate. The Calcareous marl and coloured sandstone soils of Maikammer fundamentally shape the character of the wines. Here, where the climate has Mediterranean characteristics and the Haardt acts as a protective wall against westerly winds, the grapes ripen at the optimum temperature amplitude. The vineyards are cultivated according to ecological principles, even if no certification is sought - for Mugler, it is the result in the glass that counts, not the label.
Burgundian finesse from Palatinate terroir
The focus is clearly on the Burgundy varieties and Riesling. While the latter is the traditional flagship of the Palatinate, the Pinots and Chardonnay show just how diverse the region can be. The Pinot Blanc Reserve 2024 spends months in barriques and on the fine lees, developing a texture reminiscent of creamy Burgundy wines without losing its Palatinate fruit clarity. Mugler knows how to give the wood its place - as a structure provider, never as a flavour dominator.
If you would like to get to know the uncomplicated side of the range, you can reach for the Simply White 2024. This cuvée proves that entry-level wines do not have to be simple. Spontaneous fermentation and the absence of fining ensure liveliness and flow - a wine that invites a second glass without tiring.
The range of expertise is particularly evident in Riesling. The Riesling Maikammer Kirchenstück 2023 comes from one of the municipality's historic top sites. The weathered red sandstone gives this wine a fine minerality, while the spontaneous fermentation provides complex yeast notes and depth. This Riesling is not reduced to crisp fruit and acidity - it has substance and development potential.

Variety in a glass
The cuvées and specialities are particularly interesting. The Mugler Cuvée "R" 2023 combines several grape varieties to create a wine that is more than the sum of its parts. Mugler's flair for balance and harmony is evident here - each component finds its place without dominating the others.
The range extends to sparkling wine, where Schwarzriesling is vinified using traditional methods. This breadth is no coincidence, but the programme: Mugler and the Schädlers do not want to be specialists in a single grape variety, but want to exploit the possibilities of their terroir. The style always remains recognisable - reduced sulphur, spontaneous fermentation, long yeast storage, minimal intervention.

Craftsmanship instead of high gloss
What characterises the wines of M. Schädler - Steffen Mugler is their authenticity. Here, the work is not based on points or ratings, but on conviction. The labels are simple, the presentation unpretentious - the focus is uncompromisingly on the content. The winery shares this attitude with other progressive wineries in the region such as Michael Andres, who also prioritise quality craftsmanship over marketing.
The wines never seem contrived or exaggerated. They possess the drinking pleasure that arises when winemakers trust their terroir and their grapes instead of imposing a style on them. This makes them the perfect accompaniment to food, but also wines that are a joy to drink on their own - honest, lively and with the kind of tension that makes you want to take another sip.
