Zweigelt

Also known as: Rotburger (Austria), Blauer Zweigelt, Zweigeltrebe

Zweigelt is Austria’s most popular red wine – a crossing of St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch bred in Klosterneuburg in 1922. The variety inherits the best from both parents: the fruitiness and suppleness of St. Laurent, the structure and spice of Blaufränkisch. The result is accessible wines with cherry fruit and gentle tannin, which are ready to drink young but can also develop depth.

Heinrich in Burgenland leads our range and demonstrates that Zweigelt, when taken seriously and grown biodynamically, far exceeds its reputation as an uncomplicated everyday wine. Nittnaus works in the same region with similar rigour, whilst Loimer in Kamptal proves that the variety shows character even in cooler sites.
