Wine Description for Zweigelt 2020 by Heinrich

Character
Gernot and Heike Heinrich are among the pioneers of natural winemaking in Burgenland. Their Zweigelt 2020 embodies the winery’s purist philosophy: unfiltered, unfined and with a deliberately moderate alcohol content of 12% vol., this wine presents itself as a vibrant, approachable companion that prioritises elegance over power. The restrained vinification allows the indigenous grape variety to authentically express its cherry fruit and spicy profile.
Terroir & Origin
At Lake Neusiedl, the Heinrichs benefit from a unique microclimate: the shallow lake stores warmth, whilst Pannonian winds ensure freshness and healthy grapes. The chalky soils of the region lend the Zweigelt its characteristic minerality and tension. The winery manages its vineyard sites according to biodynamic principles, which is reflected in the wine’s vitality and precision. The extreme dryness of the 2020 vintage resulted in concentrated grapes that, thanks to low yields, are perfectly balanced.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Zweigelt, Austria’s most important red wine variety, is a cross between St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch. At Heinrich, the grape variety is vinified with minimalist intervention: spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, no technical frills. The moderate alcohol content points to earlier harvesting and a deliberate avoidance of over-extraction. The result is a juicy, vibrant wine with fine tannin structure that combines drinkability with terroir expression – typical of the Heinrich signature, which values authenticity over international polished aesthetics.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This approachable Zweigelt harmonises beautifully with Wiener Schnitzel, Tafelspitz or roasted duck. The moderate structure makes it an ideal companion for hearty pasta, pizza with salami or grilled vegetables. Also an excellent choice with hard cheeses such as Bergkäse or charcuterie. An uncomplicated everyday wine that shows its full freshness when lightly chilled at 14-16°C.
