Wine description for Gluegglich Rosé by Loimer
A rosé that refuses to behave. Where the Kamptal usually delivers Grüner Veltliner of slender precision, Fred Loimer here reveals the other side of his skill: spontaneous, unpolished, full of edge. The Gluegglich – the name sounds like a dialect word and means exactly what happens in the glass – is wine without a safety net, and precisely for that reason so alive.
- Colour & appearance
- Pink grapefruit, slightly hazy – the yeast is allowed to remain visible, no glossy finish, no cosmetic filter.
- Nose
- Bright red berries meet a hint of vanilla and fruit sweets. Alongside this, cold fruit tea, fine yeasty notes, fragrant blossoms and fresh herbs. Surprisingly deep for a rosé – there is more going on here than the label suggests.
- Palate
- Berry-driven, juicy, with piquant phenolics – that fine grip which gives the wine structure. Cool spice, chervil and wild mint take hold of the palate. At a slender 10.5% vol., everything remains feather-light and refreshing without lacking substance.
- Finish
- Herbal, dry, with an echo of red berries and a saline streak that clears the mouth rather than weighing it down. A finale that quenches thirst and whets the appetite.
- Terroir & origin
- The Kamptal near Langenlois is a geological patchwork of primary rock, loess and volcanic relics. Cool air from the Waldviertel flows into the valley from the north, while Pannonian warmth presses in from the south – temperature amplitudes that yield intensely aromatic grapes. Loimer ranks among Austria’s defining estates.
- Grape varieties & vinification
- A cuvée of Pinot Noir, Zweigelt and Sankt Laurent – deeply rooted Austrian grape varieties. Vinified in the old school manner: spontaneously fermented, partly with whole berries, unfined and unfiltered, patiently aged in wood. Without SO2 during maturation, only a small amount at bottling.
- Food recommendations
- Sensational with dishes that bring just as uncomplicated joy: crispy fried chicken (Backhendl), tomato and burrata salad, chargrilled vegetables or currywurst on a long summer evening. Salmon sushi, too, finds an equal companion at the table here.
- Special features
- Fred Loimer, co-founder of respekt-BIODYN, farms his vines biodynamically – more strictly than Demeter, with quality standards extending right into the cellar. The Gluegglich belongs to the estate’s natural wine line: no additives, no flinching at haze, no pressure to conform. A rosé for anyone who values character over shades of colour.
