Tasting note
- Character
- An easy-going red wine with surprising depth: dark berry fruit, delicate spice and a drinkability that invites you in from the very first sip. At a moderate 12% ABV, it remains lithe and lively – an everyday wine that nevertheless has far more to say than one might expect. Its dry profile underscores its clear, straightforward nature.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from Pamhagen in Burgenland, at the lowest point in Austria, amidst the flat steppe landscape surrounding Lake Neusiedl. Here, the Michlits family runs a Demeter-certified farm that intertwines viticulture, livestock rearing and cereal cultivation: over 300 Angus cattle provide the fertiliser for the vineyards. The cow motif on the label symbolises this cycle – the estate is conceived as a living organism.
- Grape Varieties & Vinification
- The cuvée brings together Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt and Sankt Laurent – those varieties that have always defined Pannonian Burgenland. Blaufränkisch contributes structure and peppery spice, Zweigelt juicy cherry fruit, and Sankt Laurent dark depth and elegance. In the cellar, patience reigns: Werner Michlits works exclusively with gravity, entirely without pumps. The grapes mature in concrete eggs, whose shape allows natural circulation during fermentation – spontaneously fermented, unfined, and unhurried.
- Food Pairings
- Its supple, fruit-forward style makes it a versatile companion at the table: equally convincing with Wiener Schnitzel of veal, roast duck, pasta with mushrooms or a cheese board featuring Alpine cheese. Also an excellent choice when served slightly chilled alongside oven-roasted vegetables or a rustic Brettljause evening – and enjoyed on its own, it is a glass that tempts you to pour another.
