Welschriesling

Also known as: Olaszrizling (Hungary), Laški Rizling (Slovenia), Riesling Italico (Italy)

Welschriesling shares only its name with true Riesling – a confusion that has never done the variety justice. Whilst Riesling strives for minerality and ripeness, Welschriesling’s strength lies in its freshness and lightness. A variety for quick enjoyment? Often, yes. But not at Velich on Lake Neusiedl, where Welschriesling is interpreted as a serious single-vineyard wine.

In Austria, the variety is found primarily in Burgenland and Styria. Tement in southern Styria demonstrates that Welschriesling can indeed develop depth, whilst Meinklang emphasises the crisp, uncomplicated side – without allowing it to become arbitrary.
