Wine Description for Alten Reben Welschriesling DAC 2023 from Sattlerhof

Colour & Appearance
Medium straw yellow with brilliant clarity – a wine that already promises substance and maturity on the eye.
Nose
Here reveals itself a Welschriesling of unusual elegance and complexity. The nose is positively seductive: creamy beeswax notes meet quince, yellow apple and ripe pear. Interspersed with these shimmer flint and a fine smoky note, reminiscent of great Chenin Blanc from the Loire. Hay flowers, white blossoms and a hint of patisserie along with delicate stone fruit round out the aromatic spectrum – a fragrant interplay that invites lingering.
Palate
On the palate, the true greatness of this wine reveals itself: profound, sensual and of remarkable structure. The white-fleshed fruit with ripe pear is accompanied by a present yet perfectly integrated oak note. Saline minerality and a hint of white pepper lend tension, whilst a silky texture and creamy fullness provide opulence. The vital acidity kick keeps everything in balance, a fine tannic grip gives the wine additional definition. The complexity and ambition are impressive.
Finish
Excellent length and precision. The mineral notes linger, underpinned by fine fruit sweetness and persistent freshness.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from 60-year-old vines on extreme slopes (up to 80% gradient) between 250 and 450 metres altitude. The soils of quartz, mica, quartz sands and calcareous gravel lend the wine its pronounced mineral signature – typical of the finest vineyard sites in South Styria.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Spontaneous fermentation following extended skin contact, subsequently aged in 300-litre barrel. This artisanal vinification respects the age of the vines and allows the terroir room to unfold.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A wine for discerning pairings: pan-fried turbot, scallops, calf’s sweetbread in butter, creamy risotto or aged mountain cheese. Also an exciting choice with truffle-based dishes.
Special Features
A Welschriesling that redefines the boundaries of the grape variety – with the depth and complexity of a great white wine. The age of the vines and the uncompromising winemaking make it a statement wine from Sattlerhof.
