Wine description for Welschriesling 2025 by Velich
- Character
- A dry Welschriesling of unusual depth: vibrant acidity, subtle fruit, a hint of herbal spice. Velich proves that this variety, so often underestimated in Austria, is capable of far more than ending up in spritzers and Heuriger wines. This is not a wine that shouts – it convinces through captivating clarity and the tension that distinguishes all Velich white wines.
- Terroir & Origin
- The estate is located in Apetlon, on the south-eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland. The Pannonian climate brings hot, dry summers and cold winters with extreme temperature fluctuations. Soils of limestone, gravel and sand lend the white wines the minerality and tautness for which Velich is internationally renowned.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Heinz Velich has focused on white wine since the early 1990s – in a region otherwise famous for red wine. His credo: minimal yields, meticulous selection, no oenological tricks. Spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts and long ageing on the lees are living practice here. The Welschriesling also benefits from this patience, receiving time that Austrian white wines rarely get.
- Food Pairings
- An ideal companion to grilled zander, spring vegetables with herbs or Wiener Schnitzel of veal. Its fine acidity also makes it a great pleasure alongside light starters and asparagus – especially when drunk young, while its freshness is at its most vivid.
