Wine description for Welschriesling Ottenberg Veitlhansl Südsteiermark DAC 2021 by Tement

Character
A precise, dry white wine with a clear sense of place: The Veitlhansl is a single-vineyard bottling from Tement, one of the defining estates of Südsteiermark. With 12.5% alcohol and virtually no residual sugar, it embodies the house’s modern, straightforward style – taut, mineral-driven and to the point. Not a wine that seeks to impress, but one that convinces through restraint and precision.
Terroir & Origin
The Ottenberg lies at the heart of the Südsteiermark DAC, one of Austria’s most demanding wine regions. The characteristic Opok soils – a mix of marl, limestone and clay slate – lend the wines from these slopes their typical tension and mineral depth. The continental climate with warm days and cool nights ensures slow ripening and natural freshness. The 2021 vintage is regarded in Styria as cool and structured, with good acidity and an elegant profile – ideal conditions for a pure Welschriesling.
Grape Variety & Vinification
The Welschriesling is the classic signature variety of Südsteiermark – despite its modest reputation in other regions, it shows remarkable character strength here, on the right sites and in the right hands. Tement vinifies it with the goal of maximum clarity of origin: clean fermentation, gentle handling, no oak influence. The result is a wine that makes the identity of single-vineyard winemaking in Styria immediately tangible – crafted with precision, without affectation.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The vibrant acidity and lean structure make this wine an ideal companion to Styrian cuisine. Recommended with grilled river fish, blue trout or pike-perch fillet on a bed of vegetables. Equally harmonious with Brettljause, goat’s cheese or light vegetable dishes with herbs. A wine for the table – convivial, unpretentious, yet never banal.
