Tasting note
Welschriesling is the underestimated soul of Southern Styria – and at Sattlerhof in Gamlitz, one of the region’s most respected estates, this variety receives the attention it deserves. The Kleine Gärten 2025 is the carefree introduction to what Willi and Maria Sattler built up in the 1980s and what their sons Alexander and Andreas continue today with crystalline precision.
- Colour & appearance
- Pale straw yellow with distinct green reflections – youthful, clear, inviting.
- Nose
- Subtle and fine: pear, grapefruit and honeydew melon rise from the glass first. With air, green apple, nettle and a hint of anise join them, underpinned by delicate mineral nuances that promise finesse.
- Palate
- Light-footed and playful. The bright fruit of the nose returns, interwoven with fine spicy notes. No intrusive acidity, but rather a gentle texture with invigorating freshness – a true drinking wine with just 12 per cent alcohol.
- Finish
- Clean, cool, with a delicate herbal note that lingers pleasantly and leaves you thirsty – in the best possible sense.
- Terroir & origin
- The vines, between 5 and 15 years young, are rooted in steep vineyard sites at 300 to 600 metres above sea level around Gamlitz. Quartz, limestone and gravel soils along with the cool climate shape its clear, slender style. The Southern Styria DAC classification guarantees fidelity to its origin.
- Grape variety & vinification
- Pure Welschriesling, hand-harvested, spontaneously fermented and aged on the gross lees for six to twelve months – which explains the fine texture alongside the slender freshness.
- Food recommendations
- Uncomplicated cuisine is the order of the day: Backhendl (Viennese fried chicken), Styrian potato salad, asparagus with vinaigrette, trout meunière or a simple spring herb salad.
- Special features
- The combination of spontaneous fermentation and long lees contact gives this young Welschriesling a depth rarely found in this weight class – pure origin, without any embellishment.
