Wine description for Welschriesling Trockenbeerenauslese 2009 375ml by Velich
- Colour & Appearance
- A deep, highly viscous dark amber, which already in the glass announces the enormous density of this elixir.
- Nose
- An aristocratic and multi-layered perfume that is entirely free of heavy sweetness. It reveals noble notes of pipe tobacco, dried dates, figs and ripe apricots. Behind these lie nuances of candied ginger, orange zest, liquid honey, white nougat, as well as a touch of mocha and the finest malt.
- Palate
- On the palate, a highly concentrated, creamy nectar of infinite elegance is revealed. The opulent sweetness is masterfully balanced by a lively, vibrant acidity and a striking, almost salty vein – a texture reminiscent of a marriage between mature Sauternes and fine crème caramel au beurre salé. The extremely long wood ageing contributes structure and delicate tones of roasted almonds and vanilla.
- Finish
- A sheer endless finish, carried by a fine, noble bitterness and spice. It bids farewell with the fascinating interplay between the sweetness and bitterness of candied bitter orange peel.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes ripen in the Seewinkel on the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl (Apetlon, Burgenland). The Pannonian climate with its hot summers and the damp autumn mists of the lake provide perfect conditions for the noble rot fungus Botrytis cinerea on the sandy limestone and gravel soils of the region.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- This single-varietal Welschriesling is crafted exclusively from hand-selected, shrivelled berries. The grapes were spontaneously fermented and matured for an exceptionally long period of more than ten years in used barriques.
- Food Pairings
- Outstanding with a pear and Roquefort tart, with a classic foie gras crème brûlée with foie gras praline, or as a sweet contrast to a pineapple in puff pastry.
- Special Features
- A monument of Austrian sweet wine. With enormous patience, Heinz Velich proves here that a TBA made from Welschriesling can achieve a grandiose balance of salty freshness and baroque fullness through extremely long barrel ageing, far removed from simple, cloying sweetness.
