Wine Description for Welschriesling Trockenbeerenauslese 2009 375ml by Velich

Colour & Appearance
Deep amber with golden lustre – a colour that already hints at the years of ageing and extreme concentration of this extraordinary dessert wine. Syrup-like viscosity in the glass.
Nose
An aromatic firework of overwhelming complexity: pipe tobacco meets dried dates, figs and apricots. These are joined by candied ginger, candied orange peel, honey and white nougat. Nuances of malt and mocha round out the bouquet. Despite all the sweetness, the nose is remarkably light-footed and elegant.
Palate
Here reveals itself the true greatness of this nectar: creamy and velvety, it caresses the palate whilst a brilliant acidity structure and a fascinating salinity perfectly balance the enormous sweetness. The texture recalls a liaison of mature Sauternes and Crème Caramel au Beurre salé. The lengthy barrel ageing imparts structure and adds notes of roasted almonds and vanilla.
Finish
Endlessly long and of bewitching complexity. Candied bitter orange peel with its fine balance of sweetness and bitterness dominates the finale, accompanied by wood notes and a hint of caramel. A finish that resonates for minutes.
Terroir & Origin
From the Seewinkel at Lake Neusiedl, where morning mists and high humidity create ideal conditions for Botrytis cinerea – that noble rot which transforms grapes into liquid gold.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Welschriesling, exclusively from raisined, botrytised berries. Spontaneous fermentation and subsequent ageing in used barrels for more than ten years. This patient vinification imparts the wine its extraordinary depth and complexity.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Crème brûlée of foie gras, pear and Roquefort tart or grilled pineapple in puff pastry. Equally magnificent with mature blue cheeses or simply on its own as a meditative experience.
Special Features
A wine of monumental class at a positively shamefully fair price. Velich proves that Austrian TBAs belong among the world’s great dessert wines – and the price-to-pleasure ratio is simply sensational.
