Wine description for Welschriesling Trockenbeerenauslese 2009 375ml by Velich

Colour & Appearance
Deep, rich amber with dark gold reflections – the colour alone reveals the extreme concentration and considerable age of this nectar.
Nose
An aromatic complex of captivating complexity: pipe tobacco and dried dates meet figs, plums and apricots. These are joined by candied ginger, candied orange peel, honey and white nougat, rounded off by malt and mocha notes. Despite the obvious sweetness, the bouquet is remarkably light-footed and elegant.
Palate
Here the true greatness of this TBA reveals itself: viscous and highly concentrated, yet with a creamy texture that spreads almost silkily across the palate. The balance is flawless – opulent sweetness is counterbalanced by vibrant acidity and a fascinating salinity reminiscent of aged Sauternes with crème caramel au beurre salé. The long barrel ageing contributes burnt almonds and vanilla without ever becoming dominant.
Finish
Endlessly long and of great complexity. Candied bitter orange peel with its fine balance of sweetness and bitterness characterises the finale, accompanied by spicy oak notes and a lingering freshness that dispels any thought of heaviness.
Terroir & Origin
From the Seewinkel on Lake Neusiedl, where morning mists and high humidity create ideal conditions for Botrytis cinerea – that noble rot which transforms ordinary grapes into extraordinary wines.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Welschriesling from fully raisined grapes, spontaneously fermented and aged in used barrels for more than ten years. This patience pays dividends in structure and complexity.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Classically with crème brulée of foie gras, pear and Roquefort tart or grilled pineapple in puff pastry. Equally magnificent with aged blue cheese or simply on its own as a meditative dessert in a glass.
Special Features
A wine of impressive complexity and perfect balance that demonstrates Austrian sweet wines belong among the world’s finest – and at a price that seems positively modest given the quality on offer.
