Tasting note
Character
The Weißer Mulatschak is more than a wine – it is an expression of a philosophy. Meinklang, one of Austria’s most consequential biodynamic estates, understands its wines as living testimonies of a landscape, not merely as products. The name “Mulatschak” – derived from the Pannonian term for an uninhibited celebration – reveals this attitude: seriousness in production, lightness in the glass. With 11.5% alcohol, this blend remains elegant and accessible without losing its expressive power.
Terroir & Origin
The Burgenland, more precisely the flat, wind-swept vineyard sites around Lake Neusiedl, unmistakably shapes this wine. The Pannonian climate – hot summers, cold winters, minimal rainfall – ensures ripe fruit whilst maintaining vibrant acidity. Meinklang’s expansive vineyards, managed in harmony with biodynamic principles according to Demeter standards, produce grapes of remarkable vitality. The soil, characterised by gravel and loamy components, gives the wine its earthy rootedness.
Grape Varieties & Vinification
The Weißer Mulatschak unites three classic Austrian grape varieties: Grüner Veltliner with its spicy pepper notes and crisp acidity, Welschriesling with its fresh, floral lightness, and the aromatically multifaceted Traminer, which lends the blend a subtle exotic depth. Vinification at Meinklang follows a minimalist, natural approach – minimal intervention in the cellar, great trust in the quality of the grapes. The result is a wine that holds freshness and complexity in harmonious balance.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The Weißer Mulatschak is a versatile table companion. Its lively acidity and moderate aromatics make it the ideal partner for Wiener Schnitzel, grilled zander or a Brettljause with spicy cold cuts. It also harmonises beautifully with Asian dishes such as dim sum or lightly spiced noodle dishes. A wine for everyday enjoyment – in the best sense.
