Wine Description for Gevrey-Chambertin „Les Corbeaux“ 1er Cru 2023 by Trapet Père & Fils

Character
A Premier Cru of classical bearing – precise, profound and possessing that unmistakable seriousness which distinguishes Gevrey-Chambertin from all other appellations of the Côte de Nuits. Trapet Père & Fils, one of the oldest and most esteemed estates of the village, embodies with this wine a philosophy that places terroir above technique and patience above intervention.
Terroir & Origin
Les Corbeaux lies in the northern part of the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, on the slopes of the Côte de Nuits, where limestone-rich soils with clayey elements create a structure-giving minerality. The vintage 2023 is regarded in Burgundy as exceptionally warm and sun-blessed – a year that ripened early and produced wines of concentrated fruit and silky texture, without neglecting the acidity arc typical of Burgundy. The vineyard site itself possesses a quiet, almost introverted strength that stands in pleasing contrast to the pomp of the Grands Crus.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir in Gevrey-Chambertin is not merely a grape variety – it is the expression of a place, a history, a way of life. The Trapet estate has been working for years according to the principles of biodynamic viticulture, which gives the wine a vibrant, unadulterated connection to the earth. The ageing takes place traditionally in oak barrels, with careful attention to the preservation of freshness and terroir expression. At 13.0% alcohol, the wine displays a remarkable elegance and restraint for the vintage.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This Premier Cru demands the table and time. It harmonises beautifully with Coq au Vin, braised duck with root vegetables or a venison loin with wild mushrooms. Classic Burgundy snails in herb butter or a well-aged Époisses would also be worthy companions. Those drinking it young should decant it for at least an hour – or better still: wait a few years.
