Wine Description for Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru „Les Cazetiers“ AOC 2023 by Bruno Clair

Character
A wine that embodies the essence of the Côte de Nuits in its purest form: precise, profound and of unmistakable terroir authenticity. Bruno Clair, one of Burgundy’s most reliable houses, has understood for decades how to let the character of its vineyard sites speak – without exaggeration, without artifice. The 2023 vintage brings with it a sun-blessed ripeness that nonetheless preserves the austerity and depth typical of Gevrey.
Terroir & Origin
Les Cazetiers ranks among the most renowned Premier Crus of the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation and lies in the northern part of the commune, immediately below the Grands Crus. The soil is characterised by calcareous clay and marl on a solid limestone foundation – a terroir that gives Pinot Noir structure, minerality and longevity. The 2023 vintage in Burgundy was marked by early warmth and a dry summer, resulting in exceptional aromatic concentration whilst maintaining moderate alcohol – a balance that skilled winemakers achieved particularly well this year.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Pinot Noir – the only possible choice in this appellation and at the same time one of the world’s most demanding grape varieties. Bruno Clair works with the ethos of a craftsman vigneron: careful hand-harvesting, gentle processing and ageing in wooden casks that places fruit and terroir at the forefront, without overworking them. The result is a wine with silky texture, fine tannins and the characteristic tension that a good Gevrey can develop over many years.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine for the formal table. Classically it harmonises beautifully with Boeuf Bourguignon, braised lamb shoulder or Coq au Vin. Aged Époisses or a robust Comté are equally worthy companions. For those who prefer something simpler: a fine piece of Entrecôte from the charcoal grill – nothing more is needed to understand this wine.
