Wine Description for Gevrey Chambertin „Vieilles Vignes“ rouge AOC 2023 by Charlopin Tissier

Colour & Appearance
Muted violet-red with youthful intensity, barely lightening towards the rim – a visual promise of the concentration this wine unfolds on the palate.
Nose
A captivating opening that immediately enchants: dark berries and black cherries dominate, accompanied by oriental spices and noble chocolate. Above this hovers a cool, chalky minerality that lends the wine that aristocratic character for which great Gevrey-Chambertin is renowned. This marriage of opulence and finesse is simply masterful.
Palate
A seducer in the best sense: The sweet fruit combines harmoniously with spice notes, liquorice and chocolate nuances into a charming yet never intrusive flavour experience. The structure is sinewy and elegant, the tannins fine-grained and perfectly integrated. For all its accessibility, the Burgundian origin remains unmistakable – here the terroir speaks with a clear voice.
Finish
Long, spicy and carried by cool minerality. The fruit lingers persistently without ever feeling heavy.
Terroir & Origin
The 0.68 hectares in the Climat Marchais lie directly beneath the legendary Clos Lavaux Saint Jacques – a privileged vineyard site with limestone and clay soils that give the wine its characteristic tension between power and elegance.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir from old vines, completely destemmed and spontaneously fermented following cool pre-fermentation. The 18-month maturation takes place in 228-litre barriques from François Frères with 50-75% new oak – an ambitious yet perfectly balanced wood treatment that supports the wine without dominating it.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Venison loin with lingonberries, Coq au Vin, duck breast with cherry sauce, aged Comté or Époisses. Also an excellent choice with mushroom dishes featuring truffle.
Special Features
A Burgundy of the highest calibre at a remarkably fair price – Charlopin-Tissier proves once again why the domaine counts among the region’s insider tips. The 2023 vintage shows excellent drinking maturity already, yet promises good development potential for the next 8-10 years.
