Wine Description for Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Ostrea AOC 2023 1500ml Magnum by Trapet Père & Fils

Character
A classic Gevrey-Chambertin from the house of Trapet Père & Fils – one of the most tradition-steeped estates of the Côte de Nuits. The Cuvée Ostrea, named after the fossil oysters that once characterised the limestone soil of this vineyard site, embodies the biodynamic philosophy of the estate: respect for the soil, patience in the cellar and unwavering faith in the terroir. In the large-format magnum bottle, this wine matures slowly and evenly – a promise of extraordinary longevity.
Terroir & Origin
Gevrey-Chambertin is regarded as one of Burgundy’s most significant wine-growing centres, shaped by limestone-rich marl soil with characteristic fossil deposits – precisely those oysters that lend the cuvée its name. Trapet manages its parcels according to biodynamic principles, which impart vitality to the soil and a rare mineral depth to the wine. The 2023 vintage produced elegant, fruity wines with good structure in Burgundy, despite climatic challenges.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Pinot Noir – the soul of Burgundy. In the hands of Trapet, this delicate grape variety unfolds its full complexity: careful hand-harvesting, gentle vinification and ageing in oak barrels, which provides structure without dominating. The estate favours restraint and precision to bring the natural expressiveness of the terroir to the fore. At 13.0% vol., the wine displays a balanced, by no means exuberant maturity.
Food Pairing Suggestions
An ideal companion to classic Burgundian cuisine: Bœuf Bourguignon, Coq au Vin or braised lamb loin with Provençal herbs. It also harmonises beautifully with aged Comté or Époisses. Those who open it young should decant it – or better still: wait a few years and enjoy the magnum on a special occasion.
