Charlopin Tissier

Some family trees are worth reading twice. Yann Charlopin is the son of Philippe Charlopin, whose mentor was none other than Henri Jayer – arguably the most influential winemaker of post-war Burgundy. To this he added an apprenticeship with Jean-Marie Fourrier. Armed with this foundation, Yann founded his own Domaine in Morey-Saint-Denis in 2013 together with his wife Justine Tissier. Just over four hectares in the Côte de Nuits: Marsannay, Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée and a parcel in the legendary Clos Vougeot. Organic handwork, spontaneous fermentation, slow ageing on fine lees. The wines now appear on the wine lists of The French Laundry, Tour d'Argent and Frenchie – for a domaine not yet 15 years old, a remarkable list of references.
More about Charlopin Tissier
The Legacy of Giants
The story doesn't begin with Yann, but with his father Philippe Charlopin. He worked closely with Henri Jayer, the man who invented the modern Burgundy style: low yields, cold maceration, minimal intervention. What Yann learned in his father's cellar, he deepened with Jean-Marie Fourrier – another purist of the Côte de Nuits. This school shapes every wine of the Domaine: The Clos Vougeot Grand Cru shows power without heaviness, the Marsannay Les Longeroies elegance without arbitrariness.

Justine's Dowry
The starting gun fired in Marsannay. Justine Tissier's family owned vineyards there, and when the opportunity came, the two seized it. Marsannay is considered the gateway to the Côte de Nuits – the only Burgundy appellation that produces wines in all three colours. Yann focuses on red: cool-fermented Pinot Noir, completely destemmed, fermented with natural yeasts. The wines mature slowly on fine lees, are barely sulphited and only minimally filtered. The result: Burgundian transparency that lets you taste the soil.
From Morey to Vosne
With the encouragement of Jean-Marie Fourrier, Yann and Justine took over Domaine David Clarke in Morey-Saint-Denis in 2015. Since then, the portfolio has grown: Gevrey-Chambertin from old vines, Vosne-Romanée from one of Burgundy's most prestigious communes, plus white wines from Pernand-Vergelesses. Four hectares may sound modest – but in a region where every parcel counts, that's a small empire.

On the Lists of the Best
What happens after a decade when everything is right: The wines of Charlopin-Tissier appear on the wine lists of three-Michelin-star restaurants such as The French Laundry, Quince and SingleThread in California, as well as Tour d'Argent and Frenchie in Paris. For a winery that began in 2013 with a few leased parcels, that's the ultimate confirmation. Working with similar precision, though with a longer tradition, is Domaine Trapet in Gevrey-Chambertin – both winemakers who demonstrate what the Côte de Nuits has to offer.
