Wine Description for Gevrey-Chambertin „Clos Prieur“ 1er Cru 2023 by Trapet Père & Fils

Character
The Clos Prieur is one of the most characterful Premier Cru vineyard sites of Gevrey-Chambertin – a wine that embodies the serious, structured soul of this legendary appellation, whilst never forgetting elegance. With an alcohol content of 13.0% Vol. and a dry style, it displays the restraint and precision one expects from a serious Burgundy.
Terroir & Origin
The Clos Prieur lies in the northern part of Gevrey-Chambertin, where the soils are characterised by calcareous subsoil with clay components – a terroir that lends depth and structure to Pinot Noir. The 2023 vintage was marked in Burgundy by exceptional warmth and early ripeness, which favoured ripe fruit and silky textures, yet had to be carefully managed by experienced winemakers in the vineyard to preserve freshness and terroir-typical tension.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Trapet Père & Fils ranks among the most traditional and respected domaines in Gevrey-Chambertin, with roots running deep into the village’s history. The estate operates biodynamically – a commitment to soil vitality that is reflected in the wine. The Pinot Noir is vinified with the utmost care: gentle extraction, controlled ageing in oak barrels, always with the aim of letting the terroir speak rather than the technique. The result is a wine of fine texture, vibrant acidity and the spicy, earthy depth typical of Gevrey.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The Clos Prieur unfolds beautifully with Coq au Vin, braised lamb shoulder with Provençal herbs or a classic Bœuf Bourguignon. It also finds its natural place at table with aged Comté or a robust Époisses – dishes that honour and reciprocate its complexity.
