Wine Description for Gevrey-Chambertin „En Billard“ AOP 2022 by Jérôme Galeyrand

Colour & Appearance
Deep garnet red with youthful luminosity – a Pinot Noir that already hints at its Burgundy origins visually.
Nose
Fragrant and elegant, this Gevrey-Chambertin presents itself with a bouquet of cherry and wild raspberry, threaded through with floral lilac notes. Beneath lie fine layers of mace, liquorice and clove, whilst subtle wood spice and mild spices lend the wine depth without dominating it.
Palate
Medium-bodied on the attack with a finely woven structure that favours elegance over power. The dark forest fruit oscillates between raspberry and blackberry, showing itself remarkably forthcoming for a young Gevrey-Chambertin. The tannins are more present than in Galeyrand’s village wines, yet remain refined and situated in the mid-range. The 2022 vintage already reveals accessibility without surrendering its ageing potential – a balancing act that succeeds.
Finish
Medium length with lingering fruit and fine spice that invites contemplation. A wine that deserves generous glasses.
Terroir & Origin
From the vineyard site En Billard in immediate proximity to the winery cellar, with vines from 1983. Farmed organically and biodynamically, certified since 2019. Galeyrand ploughs his vineyards and takes lunar cycles into account – an approach that combines respect for terroir with artisanal precision.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir, hand-harvested by a team of fellow winemakers. 70% destemmed, tank fermentation with natural yeasts, 24 months maturation in used oak barrels with 25% new wood. No technological interventions, no fining agents, no enzymes – minimal sulphur only. Production: 3,170 bottles.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Braised hare with spring cabbage and polenta, pan-fried monkfish wrapped in bacon with tomato compote or tagine of quince and prunes with aubergine for the vegetarian option.
Special Features
Jérôme Galeyrand is a career-changer from the Loire who builds his philosophy on three pillars: great terroir, the genetic heritage of the vines and respectful winemaking. In Burgundy since 2001, today cultivating 5.25 hectares – a winemaker who places authenticity above technology.
