Wine Description for Gevrey-Chambertin „En Ergot“ 1er Cru 2023 by Trapet Père & Fils

Character
A Premier Cru of quiet depth – precise, earth-bound and marked by that unmistakable seriousness that distinguishes Gevrey-Chambertin from all other appellations of the Côte de Nuits. With 12.5% alcohol, this wine displays a restrained elegance that relies on concentration through terroir, not through overripeness. A Burgundy that doesn’t shout, but speaks.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site „En Ergot“ lies in the northern part of Gevrey-Chambertin, a village whose name is inseparably linked with Burgundy’s great red wines. The soils of this Premier Cru parcel are characterised by calcareous subsoil and clay-rich topsoils – a foundation that gives Pinot Noir structure and mineral tension. The 2023 vintage, warm and dry with early ripeness, demanded precise work in the vineyard, but rewarded with aromatic clarity and natural freshness.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Trapet Père & Fils ranks among the most tradition-rich and simultaneously thoughtful estates of the Côte de Nuits. Since its consistent conversion to biodynamic viticulture, the estate has worked with deep respect for the living in the soil. The Pinot Noir is vinified with the utmost care – intervention is avoided as much as possible to allow the terroir to speak unfiltered. Ageing in oak barrels follows the principle of restraint: the wood serves the wine, not the other way around.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The structured elegance of this Premier Cru calls for dishes with character of their own. Classically it harmonises with braised beef cheeks, Coq au Vin or a venison ragout with mushrooms. Aged Epoisses or a robust Comté also form a fitting pairing. Those drinking it young should decant – and bring patience.
