Wine description for Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée “1859” 2022 by Trapet Père & Fils

Colour & Appearance
Intensely luminous cherry red with a dark core – dense, youthful, promising.
Nose
It builds darkly and profoundly: morello cherry, sour cherry and blackberry, accompanied by a delicate veil of violet. Behind this lie fine roasted aromas and the spiciness of juniper berries and bay leaves. A wine that reveals little as yet – subtle rather than ostentatious, with the patience of a sleeping giant.
Palate
The fruit glides gently across the palate whilst the acid structure vibrates patiently in the background – knowing full well that its strengths will only become apparent years later. Fine-grained tannins move stealthily alongside the refined fruit. Elegant, serene, balanced – greatness shines through without imposing itself.
Finish
Long and harmonious: fruit and spice emerge equally and resonate together on the finish.
Terroir & Origin
Gevrey-Chambertin, the powerful heart of the Côte de Nuits. The cuvée “1859” commemorates the year in which the Trapet family acquired their first vineyard, “en Dérée”. Today, Jean-Louis Trapet, the seventh generation, cultivates 18.5 hectares in legendary vineyard sites – including three Grands Crus. His credo: “Les hommes passent et la terre reste” – people pass, the land remains.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir, farmed biodynamically since 1996 and Demeter-certified. Jean-Louis Trapet works with gentle gravity flow in the cellar and restrained use of wood – for the village wines, only 20 to 25 per cent new wood. The result: structure without heaviness, complexity without opulence.
Food Pairings
With duck breast with cherry jus, roe deer saddle with juniper, coq au vin or aged Époisses. Mushroom dishes – such as cep risotto – also underscore its earthy depth.
Special Characteristics
Whilst many neighbours in Gevrey pursue power, Trapet opts for finesse. This wine is at peace with itself – a quiet promise of what the years will bring. Those who open it now should grant it air and time; those who lay it down will be rewarded.
