Wine Description for Gevrey-Chambertin „Combottes“ 1er Cru 2023 by Trapet Père & Fils

Character
A Premier Cru of quiet elegance and Burgundian precision. The vineyard site „Les Combottes“ lies in the northern part of Gevrey-Chambertin, immediately adjacent to the border with Morey-Saint-Denis – a geographical particularity that lends this wine a remarkable finesse and transparency, distinguishing it from the more powerful, tannin-rich wines of southern Gevrey’s core. Trapet Père & Fils embodies here the ideal of artisanal Burgundy: clear, expressive, without exaggeration.
Terroir & Origin
The Combottes are a Premier Cru with its own character: The soils of calcareous clay stone on the mid-slope zone of the Côte de Nuits foster a cool minerality and structured elegance. The Trapet estate manages its vineyards according to biodynamic principles, allowing the terroir to express itself authentically in the glass. The vintage 2023 brought exceptional ripeness to Burgundy whilst pleasingly preserving freshness and aromatics – a vintage that combines accessibility with depth.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir in its pure Burgundian form: thin-skinned, sensitive, a direct mirror of its origin. Trapet favours a respectful, minimalist approach in oak ageing, where wood serves the wine – not the other way around. The result is a wine of silky tannins, vibrant acidity and that unmistakable interplay of fruit, earth and spice that defines great Burgundy. At 13.5% vol., it moves within a classical, well-balanced framework.
Food Pairing Suggestions
An ideal companion to wild boar loin with forest mushrooms, Coq au Vin or classically Burgundian: Bœuf Bourguignon. With aged Comté or Époisses, the depth of this Premier Cru unfolds wonderfully. Those drinking it young should decant it – or better still: exercise some patience.
