Wine Description for Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru „Clos du Fonteny“ Monopole AOC 2023 by Bruno Clair

Character
The Clos du Fonteny is one of the most fascinating single-vineyard monopoles of the Côte de Nuits – a wine that combines the unmistakable seriousness and depth of Gevrey-Chambertin with Bruno Clair’s artisanal precision. With an alcohol content of 13.0% vol. and a dry character, it represents a Burgundy style that prioritises elegance over weight and places the dialogue between human and earth at the forefront.
Terroir & Origin
The Clos du Fonteny lies in the northern part of the Premier Cru appellation Gevrey-Chambertin, nestled within the legendary Côte de Nuits in the heart of Burgundy. As a monopole – a vineyard site in the sole ownership of a single producer – this wine carries the character of an unadulterated terroir portrait. The typical limestone-rich soils with clayey components lend the wine its structural tension and mineral depth. The 2023 vintage, characterised by a warm, dry summer and a fortunate harvest, produced ripe, expressive grapes with intact freshness.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir in Burgundy is not merely a grape variety – it is language, philosophy, identity. Bruno Clair, one of the most esteemed estates of the Côte de Nuits, practises an approach based on respectful treatment of the terroir and minimal intervention in the cellar. Maturation takes place traditionally in oak barrels, with wood usage always serving the expression of the vineyard site – never masking it. The result is a wine of structured elegance, fine tannin structure and considerable ageing potential.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine of this complexity deserves dishes that respect its depth. Recommended pairings include roasted squab breast with lentils, Coq au Vin in classic Burgundy style, or a mature Époisses. Wild boar loin with forest mushrooms or lamb rack with herb crust also form a harmonious pairing with the earthy, multifaceted aromas of this Premier Cru.
