Wine Description for Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Ostrea AOC 2016 by Trapet Père & Fils

Character
A classic Gevrey-Chambertin from the house of Trapet, which ranks among the most reliable and tradition-rich estates of the Côte de Nuits. The name „Ostrea“ – Latin for oyster – alludes to the characteristic oolitic limestone soils of this vineyard site, which impart its unmistakable mineral signature to the wine. With a moderate alcohol content of 12.5% vol. and a dry style, this wine displays the restrained elegance that has distinguished the estate for generations.
Terroir & Origin
Gevrey-Chambertin is the northernmost of the great wine-producing communes of the Côte de Nuits and has been regarded for centuries as one of Burgundy’s most significant appellations – not by chance does it bear the name of its most famous Grand Cru in its village name. The 2016 vintage was marked by challenges in Burgundy: spring frosts and an unsettled summer significantly reduced harvest volumes, yet the wines that emerged display remarkable concentration and freshness – the result of a long, cool autumn that favoured slow, aromatic ripening.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir is in its natural element in Gevrey-Chambertin: the combination of cool climate, limestone-rich soils and exposed hillside sites produces a style of Pinot that combines depth with transparency. Trapet Père & Fils farms biodynamically and pursues a craft-based vinification that places terroir at the forefront – with gentle extraction and an ageing process that preserves the wine’s natural structure and vitality. The result is a wine that does not view power and finesse as opposites.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The structured elegance of this wine harmonises beautifully with Boeuf Bourguignon, braised lamb shoulder with Provençal herbs or a classic Coq au Vin. Aged Époisses or a robust Comté also make fitting accompaniments. For those wishing to experience the wine in its pure expression, serve it with a simple grilled Entrecôte – and let the terroir speak.
