Wine Description for Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru „Petite Chapelle“ AOC 2023 by Bruno Clair

Character
The Petite Chapelle is one of the most impressive Premier Cru vineyard sites of Gevrey-Chambertin – situated immediately below the Grand Cru parcel Chapelle-Chambertin and closely akin to it in character and dignity. Bruno Clair’s interpretation of this terroir exemplifies Burgundian wines that prioritise depth and precision over opulence: structured, serious, with that distinctive mineral edge that distinguishes great Côte de Nuits wines.
Terroir & Origin
Gevrey-Chambertin is regarded as the most powerful commune of the Côte de Nuits. The soils of Petite Chapelle are characterised by calcareous subsoil and iron-rich clay layers, which lend the Pinot Noir both backbone and aromatic complexity. The 2023 vintage was marked in Burgundy by warmth and good ripeness – a vintage that combines fruit richness with welcome freshness, provided careful winemaking is applied. The sloping vineyard site with its natural drainage favours concentration without heaviness.
Grape Variety & Winemaking
Pinot Noir in Burgundy is not merely a grape variety – it is a medium through which soil and place speak. Bruno Clair, one of the most renowned estates of the Côte de Nuits based in Marsannay, practises a craftsman-like, precise, terroir-focused approach: restrained use of new oak, careful hand-harvesting, gentle winemaking. The result is wines that articulate the terroir without overworking it – elegant, age-worthy and of clear provenance.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine of this calibre demands the table and time. Ideal with Coq au vin, braised duck with mushrooms or a classic Boeuf bourguignon. Equally harmonious with aged Comté or Époisses. Those drinking it young should decant it generously – or better still, wait a few years.
