Grenache blanc

Grenache blanc grape – Historical watercolour from Viala & Vermorel Ampélographie (1901)

Also known as: Garnacha blanca (Spain)

Grenache blanc brings the generosity of its red sibling in white form: full body, ripe aromas, low acidity. What might sound like arbitrariness becomes, in the right hands, wines with texture and depth. The variety responds strongly to its terroir – concentrated on slate, broader on limestone.

In Priorat, Alfredo Arribas and Terroir al Limit demonstrate how Garnacha blanca achieves mineral precision on slate. In the Rhône, at Roche-Audran and Chêne Bleu, Grenache blanc is often part of complex white cuvées with Roussanne and Clairette.
