Wine Description for Sobremoro 2019 by Maisulan

Colour & Appearance
Luminous, slightly transparent purple in the glass – a wine that reveals its high-altitude origins visually from the outset.
Nose
Restrained and refined, this Tempranillo presents itself with elegance. Wild strawberry compote, raspberries and black cherries merge with redcurrants to create a multi-layered fruit profile. Beneath this shimmer sweet tobacco, fine leather and dried herbs, whilst a subtle cinnamon and nutmeg note testifies to the elegant barrel ageing.
Palate
On the palate, the wood is more present, yet always elegant and supporting. The fine-grained tannins coat the mouth with a subtle astringency – a wine that will reward cellaring. The vibrant acidity underscores the high altitude of the vineyard site and lends the wine a cool edge. Dark berries dominate, carried by a sensual finesse that holds power and elegance in perfect balance.
Finish
Long, complex and with a refreshing coolness that is typical of the finest vineyard sites in Rioja Alavesa.
Terroir & Origin
The Sobremoro vineyard sits at 580 metres altitude in Viñaspre, Rioja Alavesa. The stony, iron-rich clay soil with limestone fundamentally shapes the character of this wine. The 45-year-old bush vines trained in goblet style produce grapes of remarkable concentration and elegance.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Tempranillo, hand-harvested and sorted. Spontaneous fermentation over 20 days at a maximum of 25°C, followed by 18 months ageing in second-fill French barriques – a deliberate choice for finesse over oak dominance.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Perfect with overnight roasted pork shoulder with cumin and smoked paprika, twelve-hour lamb with dates, cinnamon and almonds or vegetarian peppers filled with rice and chickpeas with Moroccan spices.
Special Characteristics
A single-vineyard Tempranillo that combines the cool elegance of high-altitude sites with the power of mature bush vines. Maisulan impressively demonstrates here that modern Rioja can dispense with oak dominance and instead focus on terroir expression and finesse.
