Wine Description for Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc AOC 2023 from Clos des Papes

Colour & Appearance
Luminous, pale golden yellow with brilliant clarity in the glass – a wine that signals freshness and precision at first glance.
Nose
Remarkably open and inviting for such a young wine. The nose unfolds a pure, multi-layered bouquet of grapefruit and lemon zest, honeysuckle and clover, pear and white peach. Beneath this shimmer hints of reduction, crushed stone and fennel and aniseed. The aromatics are so fresh and clear that one would scarcely identify this wine blind as a Châteauneuf-du-Pape – the highest compliment. Decanting is nonetheless recommended.
Palate
On the palate, the true nature of this wine reveals itself: Grand Cru quality in its purest form. Precisely calibrated fullness and opulence meets vibrant freshness and deep minerality. The texture is silky and supple, the fruit ripe and complex – pear, quince and stone fruit alternate with mature citrus notes, bitter zests, herbs, anise and fennel seed. A wine of simultaneously powerful and elegant character.
Finish
Long, saline and mouth-watering. A lively salinity in the finale runs elegantly through the finish and leaves an impression of freshness and tension – the unmistakable fingerprint of a great white Rhône wine.
Grape Variety & Vinification
A complex cuvée of Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, Bourboulenc, Picpoul and Picardan. The grapes were whole-bunch pressed directly and fermented together in cement vats at controlled cool temperatures of 18–21 °C over four weeks. Deliberate avoidance of malolactic fermentation to preserve the natural acidity structure. Maturation in large wooden vessels. Yield: exceptionally low 20 hl/ha – well below the already strict AOC limit of 35 hl/ha.
Special Features
The 2023 marks the 37th vintage of Paul-Vincent Avril at Clos des Papes – one of the most consistent and uncompromising estates in the entire appellation. Given devastating harvest losses from rot, mildew, frost and hail in previous years, every bottle of this wine is a small miracle of nature and the winemaker’s will.
