Auxerrois
Also known as: Pinot Auxerrois (Alsace), Auxerrois Blanc (general), Weißer Klevner (Germany)
Auxerrois stands in the shadow of its more famous relatives. The variety belongs to the Pinot family, but is rarely mentioned when it comes to great white wines. Unjustly so: Auxerrois brings fullness and smoothness without becoming heavy – a gentle power that doesn’t impose itself.
In Alsace, Auxerrois is a cornerstone of many Edelzwicker cuvées, but increasingly also found as a single varietal. Zind-Humbrecht shows the variety with biodynamic depth, whilst Albert Mann presents it with clear precision. In the Palatinate, Odinstal has discovered the variety as an exciting alternative to Pinot Blanc, and Michael Andres crafts wines of quiet elegance from it.
