Wine Description for Les Forêts Oubliées VdF 2024 by Hunter McKirdy

Colour & Appearance
Pale, radiant golden yellow with delicate, lively perlage that lends the wine youthful freshness.
Nose
Restrained and precise: bright apple and white peach dominate, accompanied by verbena and lemongrass. The bouquet feels cool, bright and crystalline – an aromatic world that whispers rather than shouts.
Palate
On the palate, the true finesse of this Auxerrois reveals itself: fine spice meets delicate carbonation and subtle, yet present tannins that give the wine structure. The fruit remains elegant in the background – green apple and lemon set the tone. With just 11.5% alcohol, the wine feels light-footed and palate-cleansing, without sacrificing complexity.
Finish
Clean, refreshing and marked by mineral precision. The wine bids farewell with citrus-fresh elegance that invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes hail from the Lieu-dit Harth near Zellenberg, a cool site at 290 metres elevation with east-south-east exposure. The name „Les Forêts Oubliées“ – the forgotten forests – recalls the once densely wooded hills of Alsace. The soil of glacial moraine over Jurassic limestone-marl imparts the wine’s characteristic minerality and tension. The late ripening in this cool terroir preserves the lively acidity.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Auxerrois from 30-year-old vines. Hunter McKirdy vinifies with minimal intervention, allowing terroir to take centre stage – the result is a wine of remarkable clarity and purity.
Food Pairing Suggestions
An ideal companion to fresh oysters, goat’s cheese, steamed char or asparagus with lemon butter. The low alcohol content and refreshing acidity make it equally perfect as an aperitif or pairing with Asian summer rolls and sushi.
Special Features
A wine that represents the new generation of Alsatian winemakers: purist, terroir-focused and of impressive drinkability. The subtle perlage and moderate alcohol underscore Hunter McKirdy’s modern, unpretentious style.
