Wine Description for Chardonnay Auxerrois ZIND 2022 from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Colour & Appearance
Radiant, intense golden yellow in the glass – a colour that already hints at concentration and substance.
Nose
Fascinatingly multi-layered: Initially tropical notes of mango and lime, along with orange, ginger and ripe apple, accentuated by a fine tobacco note. With air contact, the characteristic chalky minerality unfolds, along with that flint-like aromatics one knows from great young Burgundies. Elegance, tension and impressive depth.
Palate
Polished and taut, this wine presents itself on the palate. The pronounced citrus fruit is carried by a refreshing acidity, whilst a deep stony minerality grips and captivates. Remarkable is the fine tannin, which lends structure and backbone – unusual and fascinating for a white wine cuvée.
Finish
Long, intensely saline and of impressive persistence. The aftertaste unmistakably points to the enormous ageing potential of this wine.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from the coolest part of the Clos Windsbuhl, situated near the forest. The shell limestone soils of this Alsatian Grand Cru vineyard site are the key to the extraordinary structure and remarkable longevity of this wine.
Grape Variety & Vinification
A classic cuvée of Chardonnay and Auxerrois, planted in 1989. Since Chardonnay is not permitted in AOC Alsace, the wine is marketed as Vin de France. Fermentation and ageing in traditional large wooden barrels, extended time on lees until bottling – a Burgundian vinification in Alsace.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Excellent with classic French cuisine: Poularde from the salt crust with morels and green asparagus, langoustine with shellfish sauce. Also a revelation with umami-rich Asian dishes such as shiitake congee with rayu.
Special Features
A genuine alternative to high-priced Burgundies – and at a fraction of the price. Definitely decant and enjoy not too cold from a larger Burgundy glass. An insider tip for connoisseurs with patience.
