Wine Description for Kastanienbusch Riesling GG 2024 1500ml Magnum by Ökonomierat Rebholz

Colour & Appearance
Luminous straw yellow in the glass, clear and brilliant – a visual promise of precision and elegance.
Nose
Restrained, almost shy at first, yet of impressive depth. The Kastanienbusch 2024 reveals itself layer by layer: greengage plums and mirabelle plums, freshly grated apples, exotic notes of physalis and carambola. These are joined by white tea, almond and fine herbal nuances of thyme and calendula, rounded off by a hint of white pepper. An aromatic profile of impressive complexity and finesse.
Palate
Here the wine reveals its true greatness. Present and profound, a fascinating fruit palette unfolds: stone fruit dominates, accompanied by tree fruit, grapefruit, kumquat and bitter orange. The zests and skins lend an aromatic intensity that never feels intrusive. The silky acidity carries the wine with charm and lightness, whilst a mineral tension provides structure and energy. Remarkable: with only 12% alcohol, this Riesling feels neither light nor thin – quite the contrary, it possesses an inner strength that impresses through its focus and clarity.
Finish
Extraordinarily long and mineral-driven. The fruit lingers, the acidity remains present, the tension persists – a finale that invites contemplation.
Terroir & Origin
Kastanienbusch lies at 320 metres elevation west of Birkweiler – the highest Großes Gewächs vineyard site in the South Palatinate. Protected in a valley basin from the cool winds of the Palatinate Forest, iron-rich Rotliegendes sandstone, loose granite, slate and melaphyre deposits characterise the steep vineyards (30-35% gradient). Rebholz cultivates parcels from the original plot of this extraordinary vineyard site.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Riesling, after destemming 24 hours of skin contact. Fermentation and six months of maturation in stainless steel on fine lees following natural sedimentation – an approach that places the purity and precision of the terroir front and centre.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Scallops with lemon butter, turbot with herb sauce, calf’s sweetbreads with morels, roasted lobster, asparagus with Hollandaise sauce or mature Comté.
Special Features
The magnum bottle promises optimal ageing conditions. A wine that radiates calm, whilst acting with power and delicacy in equal measure – great cinema from the South Palatinate.
