Wine Description for Kastanienbusch Riesling GG 2022 by Ökonomierat Rebholz
- Colour & Appearance
- Sparkling golden yellow in the glass, which already visually hints at the maturity and concentration of this extraordinary vineyard site wine.
- Nose
- This Kastanienbusch presents itself as rather closed in its youth and demands patience – ideally a full day of air contact. Then it unfolds its complex aromatic profile: apple, citrus and vineyard peach form the foundation, layered above with fascinating tertiary notes of earth, smoke, tree bark, wild herbs and a hint of pepper. A wine that still holds back, yet already hints at its enormous potential.
- Palate
- Powerful and structured, with a pronounced acidity that sets a brilliant counterpoint to the spicy and mineral components. The earthy, almost stony notes of the nose are mirrored on the palate as well. Remarkable how much expression and depth Rebholz achieves at just 12.5% alcohol – a testament to precise craftsmanship and excellent terroir. The elegance and complexity increase considerably over several days after opening.
- Finish
- Long, mineral and with sustained freshness that enlivens the palate and invites the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Kastanienbusch original parcel lies at 280-320m elevation – the highest-altitude GG vineyard in the Palatinate. The south-south-east facing slope, steep at up to 35%, is completely protected from cold air. The geological highlight: 280 million-year-old rocks from the Rotliegend period comprising granite, slate and melaphyre. The iron-rich, dark red soil stores heat excellently and shapes the mineral character of this Riesling.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Selective hand-harvesting in multiple passes, destemming, 24-hour skin contact. Maturation in stainless steel with 5 months on lees, bottled in July 2023.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Grilled salmon on saffron linguine, tart of peach, cream cheese and pine nuts or pumpkin with lamb mince couscous filling – the wine’s acidity structure and spice harmonise perfectly with aromatic fish and vegetable dishes.
- Special Features
- A GG that absolutely requires time – either in a decanter or better still in the cellar. Those who drink it young should open it at least 24 hours beforehand. A wine with impressive ageing potential that will reveal its true greatness only in a few years‘ time.
