Wine Description for Kastanienbusch Riesling GG 2020 1500ml Magnum by Ökonomierat Rebholz
- Colour & Appearance
- Pale, radiant yellow of crystalline clarity – a promise of precision and purity in the glass.
- Nose
- Currently closed and characterised by noble restraint, as is typical for great Kastanienbusch Rieslings. Fine mineral spice dominates: rock flour, red pepper and pimento to the fore. Beneath lie darker notes of redcurrants, lemon zest, herbal spice and vetiver. A wine that demands patience – generous decanting is essential to even begin to glimpse its facets.
- Palate
- Firm, fleshy, uncompromising. The phenolics give the wine structure and grip, the astringency invigorating rather than jarring. Citrus zests and grapefruit meet herbs and the fine bite of Kampot pepper. Purist and utterly unadorned, this Riesling presents itself – vertical, linear, threaded through with youthful acidity like a tautly drawn rope. The 12.5% alcohol brings pleasant warmth without dominating. Currently more potential than drinking pleasure – but what potential!
- Finish
- Long, mineral, carried by taut acidity. The wine bids farewell with the same resolve with which it arrives – no charmer, but a monument.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Kastanienbusch is the highest VDP-classified vineyard site in the Palatinate (up to 320m above sea level). The steep south-facing slopes in the sheltered valley basin rest on ancient soils from the Permian era – Rotliegendes with loose granite, slate and melaphyre deposits, some 280 million years old. Extreme site, extreme wines.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Riesling, hand-harvested and destemmed. Following 24 hours of skin contact, fermentation took place in stainless steel – classical, precise, terroir-focused. Rebholz’s signature in its purest form.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Risotto of black olives and citrus fruits with light caper sauce, cod fish fingers with lime-jalapeño emulsion or flank steak with vintage sardine from the grill – the wine demands dishes with substance and spice.
- Special Features
- Magnum format (1500ml) for optimal ageing. A wine for the patient and the connoisseur – those who purchase now should plan for at least 5-10 years of cellar maturation. A great wine in the truest sense of the word.
