Tasting note from dated 04.10.2021, Copyright Sebastian Bordthäuser

The chestnut bush is bordered by the chestnut trees that give it its name. Its soils date back to the Permian period, which created them around 280 million years ago. As one of the highest sites in the southern Palatinate Forest, Kastanienbusch is up to 320m above sea level, making it the highest VDP-classified site in the Palatinate. The Rebholz part of the Kastanienbusch is limited to a valley basin with a steep southern slope. There, the extremely long-lived GGs grow on Rotliegendem from loose granite, slate and melaphyra deposits. The hand-picked grapes were destemmed and fermented in steel after a 24-hour maceration period.

Nose

The 2020 Kastanienbusch Riesling Großes Gewächs from Ökonomierat Rebholz always shows its discreet side in its youthful stage. With fine spiciness in the overtone range, it is reminiscent of red pepper and rock flour. Dark and warm, it is currently outlined by red currant, lemon zest, herbal spice as well as allspice and vetiver. Closed and firm, the chestnut bush needs a long time before it fully develops its aroma. Timely decanting is therefore essential, and sufficient bottle ageing is more than advisable.

Mouth

Firm and fleshy on the palate, it is outlined by stimulating phenolics with animating astringency. Lemon and grapefruit notes are flanked by herbs and red Kampot pepper. With a pleasant warmth on the palate, it drinks purist and clear without any aromatic ornamentation. It rises like a flagpole on the palate, vertically and straightforwardly orchestrated by juvenile acidity and driven to its zenith. Closed and firm, it currently offers rather perspective wine enjoyment, which will, however, richly reward the patient drinker. Gross.
