Wine Description for Kastanienbusch Riesling GG 2020 1500ml Magnum by Ökonomierat Rebholz
- Colour & Appearance
- Pale, radiant yellow of remarkable clarity – a visual promise of the precision this wine delivers on the palate.
- Nose
- Currently closed and reserved, as is typical for great Kastanienbusch Rieslings. Fine spice notes of red pepper and stone dust dominate the upper register. Beneath these unfold darker nuances of redcurrants, lemon zest, herbal spice, allspice and vetiver. A wine that demands patience – timely decanting is essential, extended bottle age more than advisable.
- Palate
- Firm, fleshy, purist. The stimulating phenolics impart an invigorating astringency that structures and supports the wine. Lemon and grapefruit zests meld with herbs and red Kampot pepper. Pleasing warmth on the attack, then it rises vertically like a flagpole – linear, orchestrated by youthful acidity, without aromatic embellishment. Not a wine for immediate enjoyment, but an investment in future wine pleasure that will richly reward patient drinkers.
- Finish
- Long, taut and mineral-driven. The acidity carries the spicy notes far across the palate – a finale that underscores concentration and ageing potential.
- Terroir & Origin
- Kastanienbusch is the highest VDP-classified vineyard site in the Palatinate (up to 320m above sea level) and lies in the southern Palatinate Forest. The soils originate from the Permian period (approximately 280 million years old): Rotliegendes composed of loose granite, slate and melaphyre deposits. The Rebholz valley basin with its steep south-facing slope surrounded by chestnut trees provides the foundation for exceptionally long-lived Große Gewächse.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Riesling, hand-harvested and destemmed. Following 24 hours of skin contact, fermentation took place in stainless steel – a vinification approach that prioritises clarity and terroir expression. 12.5% vol. alcohol underscores the elegance.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Risotto of black olives and citrus fruits with light caper sauce, cod fish fingers with lime-jalapeño emulsion or flank steak with vintage sardine from the grill – dishes that echo the wine’s spicy complexity and minerality.
- Special Features
- Magnum format (1500ml) for optimal maturation. A Große Gewächs from Ökonomierat Rebholz that impressively demonstrates why top German Rieslings rank among the longest-lived white wines in the world.
