Wine Description for Kastanienbusch Riesling GG 2023 by Ökonomierat Rebholz

Colour & Appearance
Radiant lemon yellow in the glass, clear and brilliant – a Riesling that promises freshness and precision from the outset.
Nose
An extraordinarily complex aromatic interplay: mineral spice and stone dominate initially, underpinned by blonde tobacco. Behind this unfolds ripe lemons, blood oranges and grapefruits with their skins – a citrus fruit symphony with depth. These are joined by thyme, nettle and calendula, which lend the wine a herbal-spicy, almost meditative dimension. A slightly grapey note underscores the extract richness.
Palate
Juicy and positively quaffable on the attack, yet remarkably open for a Großes Gewächs of this calibre. White-fleshed fruit and citrus notes carry the opening. The acidity shows itself typical for the 2023 vintage: generous and tension-laden in equal measure. Towards the finish, the wine gains increasingly in structure, a light extract grip caresses the palate, whilst exuberant minerality and salinity take the upper hand.
Finish
Long, taut and characterised by cool elegance. The mineral signature resonates, yet never comes across as forbidding – a remarkable balance between finesse and power.
Terroir & Origin
The Kastanienbusch lies west of Birkweiler at 320 metres above sea level – the highest GG vineyard site in the Palatinate. Sheltered in a valley basin from cool winds from the Palatinate Forest, iron-rich Rotliegendes, loose granite, slate and melaphyre deposits shape the character. The Rebholz parcels belong to the historic original plot, with slope gradients reaching 30-35%.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling, destemmed and aged with 24-hour skin contact. Fermentation in stainless steel, followed by six months ageing on fine lees – classical, purist vinification that gives maximum expression to the terroir.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Scallops with lemon butter, steamed turbot, sweetbreads with morels or aged Comté. The minerality harmonises perfectly with oysters or sushi.
Special Features
The finest young vintage of this wine to date – a great wine that already demonstrates its class, yet undoubtedly still possesses development potential. Delicate despite super-power.
