Wine Description for Kastanienbusch Riesling GG 2021 by Ökonomierat Rebholz

Colour & Appearance
Luminous lemon yellow in the glass, clear and brilliant – a Riesling that signals its youth and freshness visually from the outset.
Nose
Immediately recognisable: the characteristic herbal aromatics of this vineyard site. Forest and meadow meet forest honey, joined by verbena and lemon balm. Green apple with its skin, a hint of blackcurrant and subtle passion fruit notes expand the aromatic spectrum elegantly, never becoming intrusive. A nose that combines restraint with complexity.
Palate
The opening is juicy, fresh and youthful – almost innocent. On a foundation of lemon curd, white flowers unfold, again verbena and lemon balm, along with pear and peach segments. Then the phenomenon: the wine suddenly gains momentum, opens up, develops enormous pressure. With air and warmth it becomes increasingly smoky and stony, vibrant and demanding. The apparent lightness is deceptive – behind it lies immense depth. A Riesling with turbo effect.
Finish
Long, mineral and gripping, with a dancing elegance that doesn’t let go of the palate. The acidity carries far, never becoming aggressive.
Terroir & Origin
The Kastanienbusch near Birkweiler is at 320 metres above sea level, the highest Großes Gewächs vineyard site in the Palatinate. Protected in the valley basin from cool winds from the Palatinate Forest, iron-rich Rotliegendes sandstone, loose granite, slate and melaphyre deposits shape its character. The Rebholz parcels belong to the historic original vineyard, with slopes of 30 to 35%.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Riesling, made after destemming with 24-hour skin contact. Fermentation in stainless steel, followed by six months on fine lees. Moderate alcohol of 12.5% vol. underscores the elegance.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Sea bass en croûte de sel with rosemary and lemon sauce, pike with yellow carrots, pointed cabbage and sweet woodruff, or risotto with spring leeks and Parmesan – the wine demands precise, not overly heavy cuisine.
Special Characteristics
A Riesling that rewards patience. Give it air, warmth and time – it will repay you with increasing complexity. Excellent ageing potential.
