The wine that captivates us today comes from the picturesque site of Kastanienbusch, nestled west of Birkweiler on the edge of a valley basin. A natural barrier against the cool winds from the Palatinate Forest, characterised by ferruginous upper reds, makes this vineyard the highest Großes Gewächs (GG) site in the Palatinate at 320 metres above sea level. The soil consists of loose granite, slate and melaphyra deposits, sloping between 30 to 35 %. It is particularly noteworthy that the Rebholz vineyards belong to the original parcel of Chestnut Bush and that the wine was fermented in stainless steel after destemming and a maceration period of around 24 hours, as well as being aged on fine lees for six months.

One is immediately conquered by a radiant lemon yellow. As the aroma of chestnut bush escapes, expectations turn into certainties. The wine enchants with its significant herbal fragrance, accompanied by echoes of the forest and meadow and a hint of forest honey. The Riesling additionally reveals nuances of verbena and lemon balm, apple and apple peel, even cassis and a hint of passion fruit. These tones are subtle and yet skilfully expand the flavour picture of the wine.

On the palate, the chestnut bush is juicy, fresh and youthful. Rounded off by an undertone of lemon curd, notes of white flowers join in, again accompanied by verbena and lemon balm as well as pear and peach splits. This wine is an untamed beast, gently cajoling at first, only to increase in complexity and power in a sudden rush. With enough air and warmth, it unfolds even more, becoming smokier, stonier, more vibrant and sophisticated, its texture firmer and grippier. The true mastery of this wine is revealed in its dancing lightness, which nevertheless hides an immense depth.

As perfect culinary accompaniments for this wine, I suggest seafood pâté with dill and lemon butter, chicken breast with carrots and parsnips or risotto with green asparagus, Gruyère and crispy quinoa.
