Wine Description for Kastanienbusch Riesling GG 2022 1500ml Magnum from Ökonomierat Rebholz
- Colour & Appearance
- Sparkling golden yellow in the glass, visually hinting at the maturity and concentration of this exceptional Riesling.
- Nose
- Initially closed and reserved – this wine demands patience and, above all, air. After sufficient aeration, a complex aromatic spectrum unfolds: apple, citrus fruits and vineyard peach form the fruity notes, whilst earth, smoke, tree bark, wild herbs and pepper lend the wine a fascinating mineral depth. A Riesling that will only reveal its full potential with maturity.
- Palate
- Powerful yet precise. The pronounced freshness of the acidity provides a brilliant counterpoint to the spicy and earthy components. Remarkable how this wine develops such power and expression at a moderate 12.5% alcohol – a masterpiece of balance. The mineral character of the terroir is clearly perceptible. Requires time and decanting to fully display its elegance and complexity.
- Finish
- Long, mineral and precise with lingering spicy notes and a vibrant freshness that invites the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Kastanienbusch original parcel lies at 280-320m altitude – the highest-situated GG vineyard in the Pfalz. The south-southeast facing slope with gradients up to 35% is completely protected from cold air. The distinctive feature: rocks from the Upper Rotliegend period (280 million years old) with angular deposits of granite, slate and melaphyre. The iron-rich, dark red soil stores warmth optimally and shapes the mineral character of this exceptional Riesling.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Selective hand harvesting in several passes, destemming, 24-hour maceration. Gentle pressing, natural clarification through sedimentation, fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Five months lees ageing before bottling in July 2023.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Grilled salmon on saffron linguine, tart of peach, cream cheese and pine nuts or pumpkin with lamb mince couscous filling. The mineral power also harmonises superbly with pan-fried turbot or veal sweetbreads.
- Special Features
- The magnum bottle promises optimal ageing conditions. A wine that gains complexity over several days after opening and possesses considerable ageing potential of 10-15 years. Essential to decant or open a day before enjoying!
